a class reunion in Houston

Reunion, Retro Games, & Thai Food: A Weekend of Nostalgia and New Adventures!

  1. From Indonesia to Houston: A Casual Reunion with Old Friends and Cold Beer
  2. Poolside Vibes, 80s Arcade Thrills, and Thai Food
  3. Ending in a Pool Hall

This weekend was all about recharging and soaking in all the feels! I’m officially 30 years out of high school, and while some days I feel every bit of those years, other days, I’m still that carefree teen running around. This weekend, we tried to channel our youth again (though we called it quits by midnight—no all-nighters here!).

Anna, my forever BFF, flew in from Washington on Thursday and stayed through Sunday. Friday, we spent the day lounging by the pool, talking, reminiscing, and recharging. Let me tell you, this is soul-repairing stuff! It was the perfect lead-up to our high school reunion that night.

From Indonesia to Houston: A Casual Reunion with Old Friends and Cold Beer

Now, a few things you may not know—we went to high school in Indonesia, so our classmates are scattered all over the world. Some couldn’t make it because of work, kids, or life happening, but about two months ago, I decided to throw together a casual get-together for whoever could make it. We ended up with an intimate crew and met up at St. Arnold’s Brewery in Houston. I had never been, but it was spot on! (Shoutout to Brandi and Monique for the suggestion!) It’s this giant open-air brewery with TVs, sports, and possibly a band inside? We stuck to the outside, sweating and drinking beer, just like old times in Indonesia. It was perfect.

Poolside Vibes, 80s Arcade Thrills, and Thai Food

Saturday was more pool time because why mess with perfection? Then we hit Cidercade in Houston. Imagine 275+ retro and modern arcade games for just $12—unlimited play! We channeled 1985 with Pac-Man, Mortal Kombat, Pinball, and yes, even Q-Bert! It was fun, but CROWDED. Seriously, kids running wild! Apparently, it’s 18+ after 9pm, but let’s be honest, that’s bedtime.

After gaming, we grabbed Thai food at NUA Thai, a Midtown gem. Cody and I discovered it in May, and it’s quickly become a favorite—delicious, authentic, and gluten-free options are clearly marked. The only downside? Parking is a nightmare, but so far, we’ve lucked out every time!

Ending in a Pool Hall

To cap off the weekend, we hit up The Pour House in southwest Houston for a round of pool (mandatory when Anna, Alex (another great friend from Indonesia), and I are together). It’s got a laid-back vibe, solid tables, and a decent jukebox—no smoking indoors while we were there, thank goodness.

All in all, it was the most heart-filling weekend. Now, I need to hear from you—what’s your go-to spot for reuniting with old friends? Drop it in the comments!
