Girls Trip: A Weekend in San Antonio, Texas

Back in Texas, Mary and I were itching for a weekend escape. Craving the vibe of Piano Bars, we landed on San Antonio and snagged a spot at the Embassy Suites Hotel on the River Walk. Our accidental switch from a Friday-to-Saturday plan to a Saturday-to-Monday escapade turned out to be a stroke of genius. Two full days of fun later, we couldn’t be happier about that little mix-up. Cheers to impromptu brilliance!

Embracing our Texas spirit, we made sure to hit up Bucc-ee’s in Luling both on our way there and back! Although it was only my second visit, the sheer awesomeness of the place still got me. Impeccably clean bathrooms, a plethora of food choices, and a treasure trove of knick-knacks to discover. Speaking of which, there was this entire assortment of ceramic pig kitchen items that had me tempted, but I managed to resist buying them all. Ended up snagging some Bucc-ee’s mints and Gummy Bears instead. Delicious choices!

During the summer, I attended a conference in San Antonio with my middle son, and we stumbled upon Box St. All Day cafe near the Riverwalk. We were so enamored with it that we ended up going back every day. The food there is not your run-of-the-mill, it’s refreshingly unique, and the atmosphere is absolutely adorable. I managed to convince Mary that we had to check it out.

Grateful for her planning instincts, she made reservations, and thank goodness for that – the place was absolutely buzzing! Without reservations, good luck getting a seat. This time around, a DJ was adding to the already lively vibe. The food lived up to its reputation, and Mary and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal.

As the night settled in, it was time for a speedy nap, a refreshing shower, and then off we went! We hopped over to the Embassy Suites for their evening reception – a move I highly recommend! Free drinks and snacks, need I say more? Energized, we made a beeline for Howl at the Moon, a spot I never miss when I’m in town. True to form, it didn’t let us down. We had an absolute blast – laughter, singing along, and just soaking in the good times.

Howl at The Moon San Antonio

Sunday marked our full-day adventure in San Antonio, and we crammed it with excitement! At the Embassy Suites breakfast, a super-friendly server asked about our plans. As the less planner-inclined one, I shrugged, and she told us about this immersive art experience called Hopscotch nearby. Sounded ridiculously fun, so we got an Uber, and off we went.

Fact: I don’t plan, but we managed to purchase our tickets online in the lobby. There was a bar in the lobby, but alas, it was only 11 am, so we resisted. “Down the Rabbit Hole,” we went, encountering laser lights that danced with our every move, optical illusions, and a BALL PIT! Yes, we indulged in some good old ball pit antics – it was a blast and quite the workout. Feeling like silly teens all over again.

Dancing by myself …

Our final morning escapade was the Riverwalk cruise. Yep, I’ve done it, Mary’s done it, but hey, when in Rome… Plus, we’re both suckers for water and boats, so off we went. Grabbing tickets along the Riverwalk was a breeze, and we hopped on board without a hitch.

The weather was fantastic, making the ride exceptionally enjoyable.

After working up an appetite, we grabbed an Uber to the marketplace. Along the street, vendors were selling Latino food and goods. We checked out the scene and then went into Mi Tierra for lunch. It’s popular in San Antonio, and though I’m not a huge fan of Mexican food, I enjoyed my lunch and the atmosphere. They even had separate menus for Gluten-Free and Vegetarian options.

Back to the hotel to freshen up for another Embassy Suites reception and then off to the Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club. Grabbed some budget-friendly tickets to catch local comics. Oh, and we may have shared (I just pushed my way in) some garlic parmesan french fries. Highly recommend those bad boys!

Heading back to Houston, we made a pit stop at The Garden Co. Cafe in Schulenburg, TX. It’s this charming place in an old house, oozing with quaint vibes and serving up unique dishes. The staff was incredibly friendly, and they even helped me pick out the gluten-free options. If we ever find ourselves passing through Schulenburg again, you can bet we’ll be making another stop!

What should we do the next time we are in San Antonio?
