There are two types of people in this world: those who meticulously plan every outing weeks in advance and those who wake up one day, stumble upon a Groupon deal, and say, “Well, that sounds fun.” I proudly fall into the latter category.
This is exactly how my husband, Cody, and I ended up at Old Humble Distilling Company on Valentine’s Day. I bought him a Groupon experience for Christmas (because nothing says “I love you” like whiskey), and we finally cashed it in.
First Impressions: From Storage Unit to Hidden Gem
We pulled up to what looked like a storage unit with a small blue light glowing “OPEN.” Not exactly what I expected for a distillery, but we were here for the experience—plus, we had a Groupon to use. Walking inside, though, was a pleasant surprise. The space was warm and inviting, with just a few tables and a small bar. It felt intimate like we had stumbled into a local hangout rather than a big commercial operation. Joe, the owner, greeted us right away, making us feel welcome from the start.
And let me tell you, it was cozy. Not in a “crammed with too many people” way—more in a “pull up a chair, you’re about to hear some great stories” way. There were two chairs at the bar, two tables occupied by couples, and Joe, the owner, standing behind the bar, ready to welcome us with the enthusiasm of an old friend.

Whiskey Flights: One Flavored, One Classic
With our Groupon, we each got a flight of whiskey each —one flavored, one non-flavored. Naturally, we shared because marriage is all about compromise and, in this case, doubling our tasting options.
Now, I have a personal vendetta against cherry-flavored anything (it usually tastes like cough syrup and regret). But somehow, Old Humble’s cherry whiskey was amazing—smooth, a little sweet, and completely shocking to my anti-cherry taste buds. On the non-flavored side, Boomtown was the clear winner, with just the right amount of warmth without feeling like you’re being punished by a barrel of fire.

The Tour: Short, Sweet, and Full of Laughs
After our tasting, Joe took us on a quick tour of the facility—along with another couple who had also found their way here via Groupon (great minds think alike). It’s a small operation, but the passion behind it is huge. Joe walked us through the process of crafting their spirits, sharing stories, whiskey-making tidbits, and plenty of laughs along the way.

Cocktails: The Perfect Ending
As if the tasting and tour weren’t enough, the Groupon also included a cocktail of our choice. I went with a Maple Cinnamon Whiskey Sour, and it did not disappoint. The flavors balanced really well—not too sweet, not too strong—just a solid, well-made drink.

Final Thoughts: A Worthwhile Hidden Gem
Would I have ever found Old Humble Distilling Company on my own? Probably not. Am I ridiculously happy that I let Groupon take the wheel on this one? Absolutely.
So, if you’re in the Houston area and looking for something off the beaten path—where the drinks are smooth, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the owner makes you feel like an old friend—this is your spot. Plus, they seem to have frequent events, so there’s always something happening.
Pro Tip: Bring a friend (or your significant other) and split the flights. It’s the best way to taste everything without over-committing to a single choice. Also, don’t judge a place by its exterior. Some of the best experiences start in the most unexpected places.
